I think in the short term my main target may need to be contracting work although until I get there I won’t really know if every other bloke out there is thinking exactly the same thing.
Anyhow, onto less worrying things…the rekkie.
We’ll be spending just over three weeks in Perth, which isn’t a massive amount of time, but hopefully it’ll be sufficient time to get a good gut feel for the place.
My Brother-in-law who lives in Sydney will also be travelling out to Perth with his family (and my Godson) for the last week.
I think he booked the tickets pretty last minute so they’ve set him back about £220 for a return flight to Sydney. I do know that there are some really good deals available on the Net for flights between Sydney and Perth though.
There are two main players in the Australian domestic flight market. Virgin Blue and Qantas (who used to have the monopoly before Branson got involved).
When Branson decided to set up Virgin Blue a few years ago, he caused a big shake-up of the Australian domestic flight market due to his low pricing. Qantas immediately had to follow suite and these mini domestic price wars continues to this day which is great for the customers like you, me and the brother-in-law at the end of the day.
Anyways, I’m really looking forward to seeing the guys when they pop over to see us in Sorrento. It’ll be nice to enjoy the holiday element of our rekkie and get a taste of the lifestyle that we’ll soon be able to enjoy in our future place called home.
Expect plenty of snaps when I’m back.

Ah Perth. I’m a migrant of 20 years, and I have never experienced such a huge increase in home purchase and rental costs. Take Clarkson, 30 K from the city, on the TransPerth Commuter rail line. A modest 3-bed 2-bath, purchased in 2005 for $210 K is now priced around $320 K – $380 K. Rent for about $350 per week. I don’t know how young people will fare in setting up. Rentals are as scarce as hen’s teeth too.
Airconditioning is a MUST. After 4 to 5 days of 33 deg heat the brickwork begins to radiate the heat inside the home, so that it never really cools, and so to get any sleep you must have airconditioning.
Chuck, I’ve just picked up on your entry and your absolutely right. Perth has now past Sydney as the most expensive city in Australia to live (based on average house prices). What a good time for me to choose to come here
Thanks for the input
Mark
I think you need to update this entry and tell people that Perth is set to be MORE EXPENSIVE than Sydney. I do agree its more laid back but it is now going to be one of the most expensive cities to live in THE WORLD. Its reputation as a cheap city still lingers but that will soon fade. People are starting to move OUT of Perth and do what you did moving TO Perth and that is selling in an expensive market and moving to a cheaper one.
Someday soon, the truth will be out and that the boom has destroyed a fair real estate market. Might as well tell people about it in your blog.
You will be happy to know that I came across your blog looking for Lara Bingle pics.
Cheers,
Chuck
