Default What to do when I arrive in Perth next week?

    Hi Guys,

Does anyone have any advice or a list of things they did when they
    first arrived in oz like:

    1)Open a bank account
    2)Medicare
    3)Driving test

Just keen to know what things I should be making a priority when i get
    there.

Got the place to stay and job sorted already thankfully!

Tax file number. You won't get paid wthout one.

You might need proof of residence to get a bank account.

Or if he does get paid, tax at 48.5% will get witheld.

As a new PR arrived in the country, one can open a bank account with
just a passport/visa within the first 4-6 weeks, depending on
    institution.

Or you can open a bank account from the UK:
    http://www.migrantbanking.co.uk

    Other points:
    1. Get a driving licence quickly. No need for a practical test for UK
licence holders in WA (do prepare for the theory test however). A
drivers licence serves as useful ID in Australia.
    2. Visit Medicare when you arrive, but they may tell you you need
to wait a few days for your details to get onto their system
    from DIMIA.
    3. If you expect to be earning over AUD50k per year and you're single
you do need to look hard at health insurance, because of the
    Medicare levy surcharge.

If living in Perth, you're likely to need a car fairly quickly. Hiring
a car makes sense intially - a good place to consider is Bayswater Car
    Rental:

#1. Open a Bank Account. Passport is sufficient ID for the first 4 weeks.
Most employers pay directly into your bank.

#2. Apply for TFN (tax file number) - without one employers, banks etc are
obliged to take 47% of all taxable income. You'd get it back eventually,
    but..........

#3. Insurance - for your belongings etc.

#4. Medicare card etc. Health costs can be high otherwise.

#5. Drivers licence - your UK licence is good for 6 months, but you might as
    well get it over with.......

    Good Luck!!

Good trick if you can do it.....I arrived on the Sunday. on the Monday
my future hubby said "Here's the shopping list" and on the Monday
afternoon the pc was up and running for a 5 hour a day job-search
campaign! I sometimes wonder what happened to that "honeymoon period"
that people have when they arrive and relax and look round the place! I
was straight into resumes and job searching in order to pay the rent!
    Ohhhhhh for a holiday!
