Default Sydney Cost of Living/Monthly Expenses

    Hi folks,

I am in the process of negotiating an employment offer for a position in
Sydney. I have dodged the "What are your salary expectations?" question
for the first two conversations stating that I required more time to do
research into the cost of living in Sydney.

So here I am doing my research I am trying to determine
average/approximate monthly costs for some common items. Any assistance
or insight you can provide is greatly appreciated.

These are the items that I am seeking monthly costs for:

    1. Rent in Sydney CBD or Lower North Shore for 2-3 bedroom
    unit/house/townhouse (serviced and unserviced).
    2. Car insurance.
    3. Motorcycle insurance.
    4. Private health care (as it is my understanding that individuals on a
long-term 457 visa are not eligible for public health care).
    5. Daycare
    6. Cable TV subscription
    7. High-speed internet connection
    8. Telephone
    9. Electricity
    10. Gas
    11. Other Utilities
    12. Tenants insurance

I'd also appreciate costs for the following every day items:

    13. Petrol for vehicle.
    14. Beer
    15. Cigars
    16. Wine
    17. Dining out for 2 (fine dining)
    18. Public transportation
    19. Lean ground beef (price/kg)
    20. Milk
    21. Chicken breasts (price/kg)
    22. Eggs (dozen)
    23. Haircut (adult and kids)

Any further information on the following topics:

    24. Living away from home allowance (who is eligible, what is a
    reasonable allowance for Sydney)
    25. Taxation
    26. Areas to live in if office is in St. Leonards
    27. Importing a vehicle (process - was it worth it?)
    28. Owning a home/mortgage (I've heard that banks will not offer
mortgages to individuals on a temporary visa).
    29. Sydney for kids (2-year old)
    30. Support network (we have no family or friends in Sydney)
    31. Quality of life opinions
    32. Purchasing a vehicle
    33. Public transportation
    34. Vacation spots - accessibility to Far East?

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

    Hi Remedy,

We used to have a borrowed cost of living calculator on our website
which may still live on at Go Matilda but in view of its unreliability
and unexplained basis we now give people a range of sources - see
http://www.austimmigration.com.au/pages/costs.htm and I hope it helps.

    Cheers,

When preparing the calculator on the Go Matilda website I based it on
details that are available in a publication that you can buy from the
    Australian Bureau of Statistics: www.abs.gov.au

Have a search there and see what you come up with ...

    Best regards.
