    Default Brisbane Queensland

As a new forum member and a resident of Brisbane, I am prepared to try
and assist with any general queries re our area and current living costs
    - such as saving on travel costs by using casual bookings at motels or
    apartments when travelling rather than prebooking at 5 star hotels;
local travel time/ distances; current fuel costs; climate; as a place to
live (beautiful one day; perfect the next); etc.

Good man, I'll be the first to get ya started then. Is it cheaper to
just turn up and book hotels or to book them in advance? Also do you
know if it's cheaper to prebook rental cars or again just turn up and
collect them on the day you need it?
Thanks any input will be greatly appreciated, Justmd

Fantastic....thanks Oldbill - I hope you realise how busy you'll be!!!
To start with an easy one for you...is it possible to live on the gold
coast and work in Brisbane? or should we live & work in the same place??
What are the transport links like...Hubby has fallen in love with the
Gold Coast, whereas I'm thinking work / schools etc and being
    sensible/boring so looking at Brisbane...

    Cheers.

You could try sending a PM to Wanderlust she was doing the daily commute
for quite some time, she's now moved up to Brisbane. It will depend on
whereabouts in Brisbane you are working and whereabouts on the GC you
live, but you'd need to allow 1hour+ for the commute each way.

On a personal basis, I prefer to stay at motels in preference to hotels
    - mainly because of the greater flexibility it can give you when
travelling. Unless you are going to a specific destination, you can keep
driving until you find an area you like and then find a convenient motel
for the night. I would suggest that you book in reasonably early in the
afternoon - say by 4PM. Some motel rooms provide basic cooking
facilities but many have some type of swimming pool; virtually all
provide a clean room with a bar sized fridge, TV, a telephone in the
room; plus complimentary tea and coffee making facilities. Expect to
pay in the range of $60 to $100 per night a room for two people
depending on where it is situated. Breakfast delivered to your room is
about $10pp. The motel owners can also provide information on local
points of interest; where to eat; road conditions for the next section
of your journey; etc. Some vehicle standby rates are cheaper than
prebooking but there are also some good combined accomodation/vehicle
    deals via holiday packages.

A few years ago I worked with a couple of people who used to commute
from the Gold Coast each day. I think in their case, there were actually
about three or four of them who had created their own car-pool. There
are plenty of people who do travel up and down each day so public
transport must not be a major problem - provided you were working
traditional hours that slotted in with the train or bus departure times.
Unfortunately I am on a dial up connection so can't telephone Translink
(transport authority) to get more specific details for you at this time.
Personally I wouldn't look forward to the additional travel time, and
    costs, involved each day.

We are not as far out as Murrumba Downs and unfortunately I have no
personal knowledge of either Regents Park, or Murrumba Downs. I
certainly can't recall hearing/reading anything detrimental about either
of these areas. However I do know that there is/has been a considerable
building boom in the Murrumba Downs area and this could well apply to
Regents Park. From memory, there were some beautiful big houses with
landscaped gardens being built on larger sized blocks in that area. Most
newer residential areas normally contain a mixture of both budget, and
more exclusive type homes. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Just out of interest, and also as someone may have a specific enquiry,
    where are you?
