Hi Everyone, it’s good to see you back.
Well you’ll probably see that things are a little on the light side since you last logged on and you wouldn’t be far wrong. I have to say it's been a pretty tough time for me during the last few days. We have lost literally tens of thousands of posts but there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.
It struck me this weekend that we used to syndicate all of our post to Usenet. Towards the latter stages I decided to turn the syndication off (in early December last year) however what hadn’t hit me until recently was the fact that 80% of all of our posts still remain within the confines of Usenet.
Getting the posts back
I’m now in the process of re-syncing all of our posts back from Usenet (into a forum currently hidden from public view). Unfortunately this is taking a very Loooooong time so in the interim I’ve decided to switch our forums back online so you can at least continue to communicate.
Currently I’ve managed to recover approximately 20,000 posts. Some of these are the spammy posts that originally lead me to break the link with Usenet. Many though, are the really useful posts that will help answer the questions on the lips of many current and future GDU members.
Having said this it’s not all good news. Unfortunately, some of the functionality associated with these old posts will be lost. (For example; you won’t be able to find your old posts through your user profile). However the information is still there and I’ve left your posts counts and other associated info to help recognise your contributions so far. I’ve also found since I’ve been trying to fix the forums that I also get an intermittent error message which I’m also trying to fix (a browser refresh does it for now) but I’m hopeful that this will not affect you too much.
Onwards and Upwards
Looking forward I have taken the opportunity to rearrange some of our forums. Our Visa Timeline forums now have their own category which I hope will make it a little easier for folks to find the posts their looking for.
I’ve also decided to move Getting Down Under to a new host which is a move I hope to conclude this weekend. The New hosting solution is a ‘distributed’ solution which means that copies of our site will be hosted in multiple locations resulting in little if any down time. I’ve also opted for automated daily backups with this new host to ensure a recovery of our site is just a click away should anything terrible like this happen in the future.
I’d like to apologise for the down time and the issues and frustrations it has caused many of you. If it’s any consolation be rest assured much sleep has been lost and time spent trying to fix things up from my side also.
I thank you for your patience and hope to get things back to normal as quickly as we can. You can all help in this space by participating and helping each other as much as you can.
Many thanks again guys
Regards
