Hi Guys,We have just started the application process for a permanent move to Oz. We would appreciate any advice that you can offer us at this juncture. We are both in our early thirties and have have two children (5 and 7). My wife is a software developer and has been involved in the IT industry for nearly eleven years. I am a secondary school teacher. Having never been to Australia we have done much research and decided that Adelaide is the city for our family. Any advice on jobs, areas to live, schools etc. For IT jobs and salary how does Adelaide compare with Perth or Sydney? We appreciate all advice at this stage. Thanks a million Ian & Michelle ![]() |

Welcome to getting down under guys
We (the missus, I and our four year old son) Settled in Perth and I have to say from an IT perspective the market is very good! For developers especially the market (and money) prospects are probably better then anywhere else in Australia right now. Best advice for getting a handle on the job situation Ian would be to do a quick search on sites such as Jobserve and Seek (These are links btw )This way you'll get an idea for the quantity of jobs and the current rates of pay. Use a site such as XE.com to do a quick and accurate conversion. I can't specifically comment on Adelaide but if you do a quick search of our forums you'll find a number of comments in relation to locations/suburbs etc. Happy to help in anyway that I can and I look forward to sharing this journey with you. I'm sure those with a similar destination in mind will give you their own view in time ![]() Regards Mark

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the prompt reply. Perth was originally our intended destination but the price of property ment we would have to borrow in order to by a house. In Adelaide we can buy a house in a good suburb outright and that is a huge attraction. But then again nothing is set in stone. Do you know anything about the job prospects for teachers in Perth? English and History are my main subjects as well as English as a foreign language (despite being an English teacher my spelling is awful so please excuse any mistakes I am a dyslexic English teacher...sounds like an Irish joke but its true) Again Mark thank you for the reply and I look foward to usng this forum. Kind Regards Ian |

Hello Ian, no problem about the spelling I didn't notice
![]() Most of the time when I'm replying to posts, it's early evening my time by which point I'm normally half way through a good bottle of wine or a few beers so my spelling is pretty dodgy too. Reference your comment about teachers.. Yes there is a significant shortage of teachers here in Perth. I read an article which you can read by Clicking Here in the online version of THEWEST which is the main daily newspaper available here in Perth. The article closes with the comments 'State schools started the year with a shortfall of 264 teachers. By the end of last week there was still a deficit of 63 teachers, including 53 high school and 10 primary school teachers.' It doesn't sound that many but for an area with a population as small as Perth its pretty significant. Still, I really don't want to sway your decision. We always had our sights on Perth but were still pretty shocked about the house price situation. When we finally buy a house we'll have a mortgage but then, we had a mortgage in the UK so for me this isn't that big a deal. A big part of moving to Australia is about the lifestyle and the improvement in lifestyle associated with not having a mortgage can very easily be appreciated so I fully understand where you are coming from. I'll be travelling to Adelaide on business within the next six weeks so I'll be sure to try and have a good luck around. You never know ![]() Regards Mark

Hi,
Just thought I can help you a bit with Adelaide, First off aparently 80% of brits who emigrate move to Adelaide ! ( so my Mum told me, it was on the news. ) I love it there, I have been to several places in Australia and Adelaide always feels like home to me ( I grew up there in the 70's ) so maybe I am biased, but the best thing about Adelaide is the weather, it's more of a dry heat so when it gets to 44degrees the sweat is not dripping off you, I personally dont like the humidity that you get when you go further north, and the winters can feel quite chilly ( not like our chilly ) Probably the worst thing about the weather, is one day it can be really hot 44 ish then the next day drop down to 24 ish, it all depends on which way the wind blows, hot from the desert, cold from the sea.... Not sure about IT work, but as all places in Aus I should imagine that they are all pretty much the same as in beautiful beaches and things to do. I didnt like Sydney as I am not really a city girl, Adelaide, even the Centre is pretty much like local town centre shopping/ working. Loads of street cafes which is wonderful.... But to be really honest I think it is all down to personal preference, but definately the biggest thing to think about is the weather, if you want it humid and tropical you need to go north, if you want it a bit cooler with seasons go south, hope I havent waffled too much.... Cant wait to be in Adelaide ( Hopefully May time )

Hi Lesley,
Thanks for the reply. The weather is a factor, lets be honest we are from southern Ireland and it does nothing but rain for days on end. Adelaide does sound ideallic but so too does Perth. We are heading to London the weekend after next to an Expo so hopefully we will know more at that stage. Thanks again for your posting. Kind Regards Ian |
