From a reliable source :
Each year the Immigration Minister announces for each of the permanent residency visa programs (skilled, family, etc) the numbers of visas that the Department of Immigration is expected to deliver. The processing centres then manage their caseloads in an effort to deliver each program. There are rumours on various internet forums presently that the skilled visa program for 2007/08 has been filled, and that there will be no further skilled visa grants until the new program year (starting on the 1st of July, 200 .We have spoken with a senior officer at the Skilled Processing Centre today who has confirmed that skilled visas are still being processed to grant. However, the rate of visa grants has slowed as they move towards meeting the program total for 2007/08. This means that general offshore skilled visa processing times are starting to push out towards 9 months - the latest e-lodged skilled visa applications that we have seen assessed are those submitted to the Adelaide Skilled Processing Centre in November 2007. We also have a few skilled visa applications that were lodged under the pre-01 Sep 2007 visa regime that are yet to be granted. For this reason we are generally recommending that at present medical examinations are not attended until there is comfort that the visa application will be assessed in the next month or two - medical examinations (and police clearance certificates) usually have a 12 month validity, which means a medical examination attended early will impact on the date of required initial entry to Australia, such that the required entry date might be very soon after visa grant, or a second set of medicals might be required to push back the required initial entry date. |

The financial year starts in July. After July 1st processing of temporary visas will be shifted to other locations to facilitate smoother processing in Adelaide. So hopefully the tempo should pick up in July.

Hi guys,
I heard the budget has already been presented and that there are some positive changes in the number of skilled permanent migrants they will be accepting in the coming year. Is this true? Is there anybody who can confirm the number ??? |

One of the other members sent me this information, the budget sure looks good!!!!!
The Labor party budget for 2008-09 includes an increase of almost 300,000 visas to Australia in a bid to address labour shortages in Australia. Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan revealed a healthy increase of almost 300,000 more permanent and temporary visas to Australia as a part of the Labor Party Budget for the 2008-09. This is the biggest annual increase in visas in the history of Australia's migration program The new budget accommodates for an extra 31,000 skilled migrant visas, and over 150,000 other permanent migrant visas such as family visas & spouse visas. There are also 100,000 new temporary work visas available. This move is aimed to address the current skills shortage in Australia, while other initiatives such as training & education have been introduced to provide long term solutions to skills shortages. These changes are part of the government's plan to meet the increasing labour demands of Australian businesses. Senator Evans commented "At the moment there is a real constraint on our capacity to grow because we just don't have enough workers,". The end result of these budget changes are that there are now more opportunities than ever before for skilled workers to migrate to Australia, permanently or temporarily to live & work. |

An extra 31,000 skilled migrant places
![]() Thats actually quite a big increase. I remember they only increased it by an extra 5000 places last year: Perhaps this is the sign of things to come for future years? Mark
